そう最初に書いてから、早速リクエストをくれた方がいる。今日はその方のために、そして、この曲を知らない方のために、英語をもっと学びたいという方のために…"The Greatest Showman"というミュージカル映画の作中曲、"Rewrite the Stars"という曲を取り上げよう。

"The Greatest Showman"は、P. T. Burnam（バーナム）という19世紀に実在した興行師の伝記を基にした2017年のアメリカ映画だ。音楽が素晴らしく、映画のサウンドトラックも世界中のチャートを席巻した。

その中で、"Rewrite the Stars"という曲は唯一の切ないロマンス・ソングとして組み込まれている。上流階級のPhilip（フィリップ）と、サーカスの空中ブランコ師である黒人のAnne（アン）。2人は惹かれ合うが、19世紀のアメリカにおいて階級や人種が違う者同士の恋愛は御法度。必死に愛を伝えるPhilipだが、Anneは結ばれるはずのない恋に消極的になってしまう…という場面だ。

では、歌詞を見ていこう。

"You know"と"I want you"の間にはthatが省略されている。that + 主語 + 動詞〜「（主語）が〜ということ」というthat節。
secret（名）秘密
secretの後ろには関係代名詞whichが隠れている！a secret (which) I tried to hide「私が隠そうとした秘密」という風に、関係代名詞節が前の名詞を修飾しているのに注意。
hide（動）を隠す
so（接）だから
keep -ing = 〜したままでいる
sayingの後にもthatが隠れている。that our hands are tiedというthat節。
tie（動）を縛る
are tied = 縛られている（受動態）

claim（動）〜であると主張する
be in the cards = 起こりそうである
fate（名）運命
pull 人 away = （人）を力ずくで離す
out of ... = ...の外に、...から離れて
reach（名）届く範囲、届く距離
decide（動）を決める
destiny（名）運命 = fate

What if 〜? = 〜したらどうか？
rewrite（動）を書き直す
※ re-「もう一度」という意味の接頭辞が、write（動）を書くという動詞についている。
to be mine = 私のものになるために
一見、notがないので肯定文のように思えるが、nothingは「何も〜ない」という否定の代名詞なので、「何も〜できない」という意味になる。
keep ... apart = ...を離しておく
the oneの後ろにはwho[m]が隠されている！関係代名詞。
be meant to do〜 = 〜するように定められている
up to ... = ...次第で
これも上記したnothing couldと同じ。no oneは「誰も〜ない」。
get to = become「〜になる」
what we get to be「私たちがどうなるか」
maybe（副）もしかしたら
※ 可能性50%くらいの感じ！

there be ... = ...がある、いる
※ be動詞の形は、...に入る名詞が単数か複数形かで変わる！
doors that we can't walk through「私たちが通り抜けられないドア」。thatの関係代名詞節がdoorsを修飾している！
walk through = を通り抜ける

be able to = can「〜できる」
within（前）〜の内側に[で]
gonna = going to
seeは「見る」だけじゃなく、「分かる、理解する」という意味もあるので覚えておく！
that以下はthat節。see that 主語動詞〜「（主語）が〜ということを分かる、理解する」ということ。
hopeless（形）絶望的な、どうしようもない
※ -lessという接尾辞は「〜のない、〜できない」という意味合いを持たせる。
after all = 結局

※ possibleに否定のim-という接頭辞がついてimpossibleになるので、この2つの単語は反対語としてセットで覚えておきたい！
